Gretchen Peters
Since her last release, Gretchen Peters, a hit songwriter (Martina McBride's
"Independence Day," Faith Hill's "The Secret Of Life") with a seemingly charmed
life has been through the wringer.
In 2004, Peters went through what she describes as a "midlife epiphany." It was
the realization that she needed to take control of her own life, and it would turn
her world upside-down and end her 23 year marriage before culminating in Burnt
Toast & Offerings, a deeply personal coming-to-terms record. She co-produced the
release with Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, 1000 Kisses) whose atmospheric playing
and intuitive production helped her plan includes performing more often. "There's
a spiritual aspect to performing," she says, "It's the only time you're completely
in the moment." And such there are a lot of really happy songs on it," Of course,
it hasn't been easy, but as she notes, "Showing your humanity is the bravest and
best thing you can do artistically." Burnt Toast & Offerings is proof of that.
